Carl H. Wente purchased 47 acres of vineyard land in the Livermore Valley in 1883. In 1912, 2nd generation Ernest Wente imported cuttings of Chardonnay from the vine nursery in Montpellier, France and sourced cuttings from the Gier vineyard in Pleasanton to develop what is now world-renowned as the Wente Clone.
Aromas on the nose of tropical fruit, citrus and banana. On the palate, flavors of pears, lemons, apples, with notes of butter, creme brulee, and toasty vanilla from barrel aging. Full mouthfeel, balanced acidity, and a long finish.
Founded in 1883, Wente Vineyards is the country’s oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery. Today, the winery is operated under the ownership and management by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wente family. Located just East of San Francisco in the historic Livermore Valley, Wente Vineyards home base is recognized as one of California’s premier wine country destinations. Recognized as “California’s First Family of Chardonnay,” the Wente family was the first in California to produce a single-varietal Chardonnay in 1936 made from the Wente clone. Today most of the Chardonnay vineyards in California are planted with this clone.
Wente produced the first varietal-labeled vintage of Pinot Chardonnay in 1936. In 1949, third generation Karl L. Wente joined the winery expanding national distribution as well as developing international distribution. In 1963, he also expanded to Arroyo Seco in Monterey.
Fifth Generation Karl D. Wente carries on the family winemaking tradition as chief winemaker and chief operating officer. He joined the family business in 2001 after earning a degree in chemical engineering from Stanford University and two masters degrees in viticulture and enology from UC Davis. Before joining Wente he worked for the Peter Michael Winery in Sonoma and Brown Brothers in Australia.

The Arroyo Seco AVA is known for its cool-climate grape growing and was actually home to the first commercial vineyard in California called Mission Ranch which was owned by the Mirassou family in the 1960s. Chardonnay is most widely grown here.
