While on vacation in Tuscany in 1981, a Swiss couple from Zurich, Brigitte and Bruno Widmer, decided to purchase the Brancaia estate in Castellina in Chianti in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region. Two years later, their 1983 vintage won the top award at a Chianti Classico tasting which propelled Brancaia onto the international stage.
Their success led to expanding the winery to purchase the Poppi estate in Radda in Chianti in 1989 and then expanding their operation to the Maremma wine region on the Tuscan coast in 1998.
The Widmer’s daughter, Barbara Widmer Kronenberg, joined the winery to head up the winemaking team after receiving her training in oenology. She was born and raised in Switzerland and was originally trained as an architect before joining the winery. With the help of renowned winemaking consultant, Carlo Ferrini, Barbara is responsible for the winemaking and vineyard management on all three estates.
